ONLY YOU CAN
12x16, Oil on canvas, 2022

Just an excuse to paint an old radio and Smokey the Bear!

I’M GONNA HOLD ON
24x30, Oil on canvas, 2023

At a point I decided to paint devices that delivered music through time. One of the things about them is they are covered in text and symbols. I love painting those tiny things. I thought I would enjoy painting the ravioli in this piece, but I admit it was the Coors can. This painting is loosely based on my father - really just anyone that has bad habits and always doing their best to stay good inside.

COOL INSIDE
18x24, Oil on canvas, 2023

I took this reference image of my daughter in front of a closed down souvenir shop across from of the Alamo. I get’s pretty hot here in San Antonio so I guess it makes sense to let people know it’s cool in your shop to draw them in. I’ve never really been into abstract paintings, but I found the window to have that feel and I enjoyed painting it.

HOT DOG
20x24, Oil on canvas, 2023

For a while I had it in my head to make paintings that were like a rebus puzzle, where I’d use objects and symbols to represent a word or words. The initial thought came from looking at old Lone Star Beer bottle caps. The idea behind this painting is simply “hot dog”. Aside from Tabasco, I hadn’t really tasted any of the other hot sauces. I was simply going off the bottles I liked visually. I tasted them when I was done and they were not so hot - probably something I should’ve thought of ahead of time.

BUTTERFLY
24x20, Oil on canvas, 2023

Part of doing these rebus puzzle type of paintings is curating objects to make the words work. The thing about this housefly toy that caught my eye was the iridescent wings. turns out I enjoyed painting the butter more than the wings, but there is something about this combo that makes me chuckle.

LUNA
22x28, Oil on canvas, 2023

A complex painting, but not in conceptuality. It was simple, I like the image and decided it should be painted. Luna, is the dogs name. She came to us with a large wound on her shoulder. She was nursed back to health and remained with us. The scar that remained was shaped like a letter “L”.

TIME TO GO
16x12, Oil on canvas, 2024

Another in the rebus puzzle series. Painting the greasy bag was really fun. There is no real restaurant with that happy hot dog. I designed, printed and greased it up myself.

ELECTRIC BLUE FOR ME
40x30, Oil on canvas, 2021

A still life through music in the 80’s. I love the colors in this one and the hairspray was a blast to paint. Definitely sparks more ideas when I look at this painting. The reason I stepped into painting with oils was to get a handle on the medium, but as I move forward with them it leaves me with a need to loosen things up where they feel right.

SHEEPSKATE
24x24, Oil on canvas, 2023

This is another painting in the rebus puzzle style. The goal was to find two objects, ideally with a vintage feel, that could visually represent the word "cheapskate." I always enjoy digging through eBay to see what combinations work well. Here I ended up with two rolling objects to illustrate that single word.

NAÎVE
24x36, Oil on canvas, 2022

The draw here was the typography and exploring new surfaces. In a quest to paint music through time I thought I’d start with myself - tell a few things about the music I cared about when I was young. It was important to grab items that were from the time period, which sometimes made things difficult, but still exciting.

LINCOLN
20x30, Oil on canvas, 2021

Lincoln is my daughter’s cat. She walked into our yard in early 2011 during a yard sale we were having. The Christmas prior to that our daughter asked for a cat as a gift. All we could give her was a toy plush cat since my wife was known to be allergic to cats. We ended up keeping her, but originally thought she was male, hence her name.
